Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Kings - this necropolis where tombs were built for the burial of the pharaohs and noble citizens of ancient Egypt. This "city of the dead" was created over 500 years old, dating from the 16th century BC and ending with the 11th century BC. Until today, conducted excavations of tombs, the number of which is greater than 60. The valley is also an excellent source of information about the life and culture of the ancient Egyptian civilization. In 1979, the Valley of the Kings is recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Site. 

 

Archaeological research of the valley began in the 18th century, but became known to many in the early 20th century, after the discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Near the Valley of the Kings was discovered by archaeologists, so-called Valley of the Queens, where his wife was buried, and the descendants of the pharaohs. 

 

Valley of the Kings is located on the opposite bank of the Nile from the ancient capital of Egypt, once called Thebes, now Luxor. The best and comfortable way to get to the Valley of the Kings will be a trip by taxi or minibus from Luxor.
